The Small Cell has evolved to cover a range of solutions from residential femtocells and enterprise pico cells, to rural and metro micro cells. While the scope of these solutions vary, they have several features in common: Small size, optimized for cost and the need to extend at least some of the level of service a macro cell can offer. The first two concerns (size and cost) need to be balanced with the third (performance), especially in the timing of the system where stability and phase accuracy need to be maintained in a compact solution.
